Rafael Waterman was born in Tel - Aviv and grew up in Rishon Lezion. He finished his studies in the primary school ("Chaviv") in the settlement and in the vocational school "Max-Fine" in Tel – Aviv.
He worked as a locksmith in Sarafend at the British Army and thereafter he opened with a partner a mechanical workshop and did carving work for the factories Okava, Gamish etc. He also designed machines and built them. In 1960, he moved to work as an administrator in "Agropaz"- a factory producing agricultural machinery and - sorting machines for packaging plants.
Later on he moved to the Aircraft Industry.
He was since his youth a member of the "Haganah". He took part in the Independence War as a tank fighter.
He was member of the "Maccabi", and a volunteer in the "Hasadran" squadrons of the "Maccabi".
