Meir Ethniel Belkind was born in Rishon Le Zion. He studied at the local elementary school (Haviv) in the village.
When he was 13 years old his parents were arrested by the Turks on account of their underground activities in NILI and were imprisoned in Ramle. The young Meir would visit them every day in order to take them food. He was active in the "Hagana" from an young age. In 1919, after the Tel Hai attack, he volunteered to take arms to the Galilee on a cart drawn by two mules belonging to his father. When, in 1920, the "Moelah" police force was set up in order to fight against Arab attacks, he was enlisted as a mounted policeman and he was only 16 years old.
He worked for two years cleaning up the area around Rosh Pina of robbers. When his period of service ended he returned to his parents? farm in Rishon Le Zion. He was an active member of the local Maccabi and played in the village orchestra.
